Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the demographic, anthropometric and clinical characteristics of children with congenital heart disease treated in a Peruvian public hospital. The descriptive, non-experimental study, carried out with 156 children diagnosed with congenital cardiopathies, has the following clinical characteristics, 69.5 % of males with a hospital stay of more than 7 days in females with 56.4 %; and in males with 46.6 % referred to the intensive care unit of females 45.6 %; 36.4 % of males with persistent foramen ovale in females 36.8 % of females; 33.0 % of males presented persistent ductus arteriosus in females 36.8 %; 42.0 % of males reported moderate depression at one minute in females 60.3 % and 73.9 % of males showed severe depression at five minutes in females 86.8 %. It is concluded that congenital heart disease predominates in males. The most common anthropometric characteristics included short stature and weight less than 2500 grams; the most frequent clinical characteristics were hospital stay of more than seven days, persistent foramen ovale, persistent ductus arteriosus, moderate depression at one minute and severe depression at five minutes. In addition, there was a significant relationship between gender and low birth height (p=0.013), as well as severe depression at one minute (p=0.015) and at five minutes (p=0.048).
