Powell Analysis of the Facial Profile in Dental Students

The human facial structure, composed of a complex interaction of soft and hard tissues, defines the individual characteristics of each person. The objective was to compare the reference standards of Powell's analysis in the facial profile of dentistry students at the Catholic University of Cuenca. The angular measurements of the facial profile were analyzed in 93 students using Powell's analysis. Descriptive statistics were applied, and the Wilcoxon rank test was used. For normal variables, the one-sample Student's t-test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used according to sex, with a significance level of α= 0.05. All angular measurements were statistically significant (nasofrontal, nasofacial, nasomental, and mentocervical). According to gender, the nasofrontal, nasofacial, and mentocervical angles were significant. In women, profile features with a prominent glabella and less chin projection predominate, while in men, greater prominence of the chin and tip of the nose was observed.
